How it works ?

To use SafeSky, all you need is your mobile phone or tablet, as well as a mobile internet connection.

How does your phone or tablet 'pick up' the surrounding traffic?

The phone or tablet does not pick up the surrounding traffic, it is not a radar!

SafeSky is a mobile application that provides traffic information wherever you are. Thanks to the GPS chip in your mobile device, the SafeSky application sends your position to our servers, which is then transmitted in the same way, but in the opposite direction, to other users of the application. This way, you can share your location with the SafeSky community at any time.

The exchange protocol is extremely light and allows the transfer of the position even with a very weak mobile internet connection. SafeSky manages to exchange data even with a very limited connection, an EDGE (2G) network is sufficient to exchange the few bytes necessary to share traffic positions in real time.

In addition to the traffic generated by the application itself, SafeSky aggregates traffic information available on the internet, thanks to the numerous ground stations managed and maintained by many individuals, maybe yourself? These stations allow SafeSky to obtain the position of aircrafts transmitting ADS-B, Flarm or OGN signals with high accuracy. SafeSky collects this valuable information and adds it to its own traffic to keep you informed.

If you have SafeSky Premium, you will be able to use the GDL90 protocol and view this traffic in your navigation application (SDVFR, SkyDemon, ForeFlight and EasyVFR).

Impact of topology, elevation and boundaries

SafeSky has proven to be particularly efficient in mountainous areas (Alps and Pyrenees) in numerous tests, with the high position of the antennae ensuring great mobile Internet coverage. This function allows you to be spotted despite the rocky massifs, which are a common obstacle for traditional radars. SafeSky is effective up to high flight levels, beyond FL90.

Tests have shown strong coverage up to FL45 in the plain, but SafeSky frequently permits to connect to the network considerably higher. White regions are areas of the territory that are fully inert and do not enable mobile internet connection. They are, fortunately, quite uncommon.

Border crossing necessitates a change of operator, which is referred to as roaming. There is a relatively brief loss of network (of the order of 1 or 2 minutes in general), the time for the mobile to connect to the new operator, just as that is the case is in the car.

Drones

The drone market is rapidly evolving, and decisions are taken quickly, as seen by the "U-space", which has been operational since January 2021. In terms of mode S, SafeSky is in close contact with the market's major players in order to aggregate traffic data. SafeSky will then be able to tell drones where you are and vice versa. As a result, you will be alerted of the presence of these vehicles.
